Tank-to-tankless conversion means removing your existing storage tank water heater and replacing it with a tankless unit, which is a more involved job than a like-for-like replacement since it usually means modifying gas lines, venting, or electrical connections to match tankless requirements rather than simply swapping one tank for another.
This conversion makes sense if you're consistently running out of hot water with your current tank, want to reclaim the floor space a tank takes up, are looking to cut long-term energy costs by eliminating standby heat loss, or your existing tank is due for replacement anyway and you'd rather upgrade than replace with another tank. It's a bigger upfront job than a straight tank swap, but for the right household it solves problems a new tank unit won't.
We start with a proper sizing assessment based on your household's simultaneous hot water demand, since undersizing a tankless unit is the most common reason conversions disappoint homeowners. For gas conversions, this typically means upsizing the gas line to handle the tankless unit's higher BTU draw and installing appropriate venting, since tankless units vent differently than tank units. For electric conversions, we assess whether your panel can support the electrical demand tankless units require. Once everything's confirmed, we remove the old tank, mount the new tankless unit on the wall, run all necessary gas, electrical, and venting connections, and test the system under real flow conditions.
Cost is higher than a like-for-like tank replacement because of the additional gas line, venting, or electrical work typically required, plus the tankless unit itself. Homes in Bloomington, IL with older gas lines or electrical panels sometimes need more significant upgrades as part of the conversion, which we'll assess and quote upfront rather than surprise you with mid-job.
If your tank is due for replacement, converting to tankless is worth considering before you commit to another tank. Call (215) 449-8084 for a sizing consultation.
